so I'm a feminist and a guy...go figure

So i'm sitting in my most recent class endeavor at Reformed Theological Seminary entitled The History of Christianity. In the introductory notes a discussion breaks out about the historical support for women as deaconess' in the early church. So it makes me think. Women really do get shafted alot in the church. It's unfortunate to say the least. Women seemingly do as much in the church as men and yet it is rare to find women as paid staff of the church. I'm not saying they should be ordained, or even serve as elders, but isn't it ridiculous that women can usually only fulfill the role of volunteer? What is up with that? The disparity is huge. We are so behind the times as the church, that it's not even funny. I'm not sure what to do about this. I'm not sure what kind of difference I can actually make. It just doesn't seem right. I am not sounding as impassioned as I want to right now--I'm a little tired. I just really wonder why women are usually only on staff as children's workers and maybe youth workers. What about a full-time woman to minister to the adult woman of the church? This is my random soapbox of the day. Let me know your thoughts.

  1. maybe it has something to do with being named jamie and carrying a man purse. it probably makes you more sympathetic to women, even though you are a guy (we're pretty sure)

  3. jamie, you are so on the right track here -- keep feeling frustrated! and say these things OUT LOUD - you are a man and therefore men listen to you more than, say, me.... uh-oh - my frustration is showing!!! i think i better stop now, but save me a spot on your soapbox!

  4. hey jamie- ok well i think that there is a reason that women fulfill those roles....bc most men cant- we have a motherly nature in us so we do what we can with it, and i think that women know that the little things mean just as much as the big things- men not so much they like the acknowledgement, i am by NO MEANS saying that women dont like acknowledgement and praise for good things, i mean lets face it, we are all sinful, but there is just somethinga about women that that is okay with them....God called men to be the leaders of the church- women are behind the scenes and it has always been that way, but i do agree that it can change and that women can step out of the shadows some, but mainly i just think that MOST, not all, things in the church are callings for men- God calls who he wants to be in certain positions, if women arent in those positions, then God hasnt called them to be there....think about it....its 1 am and i am going to sleep- maybe
